How to physically check if the door is locked from outside?

How can I check to see if the door is locked from the outside?

Answer 

Excellent question; to confirm the lock status, simply turn the lock handle in a downward fashion and see if the door opens.

Note: the handle will always turn (whether locked or unlocked).
